The Greyjoy Rebellion

Occuring in 289AL, the Greyjoy Rebellion was an uprising led by Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands. Tired of being subjects of the Iron Throne, and wanting to restore the Iron Islands to their traditional way of life which was lost nearly 300 years prior during Aegon’s Conquest, Balon Greyjoy launches a rebellion in an attempt to free the Iron Islands from the rule of the Iron Throne. Though his initial attacks are successful, he does not have the resources or manpower and is no match for the Iron Throne. King Robert launches a counterattack on Pyke, the seat of the Iron Islands, and after a great battle, Balon is forced to surrender his efforts. In the aftermath of his rebellion, Balon’s two eldest sons are killed, while his youngest, Theon, is given to House Stark to ensure that Balon does not attempt another rebellion.

After a failed rebellion, Balon Greyjoy is forced to bend the knee to King Robert Baratheon, while Ned Stark looks on
